Third cruciate ligament injury for Colm O'Neill, Cork chiefs confirm

The Allstar forward faces another long-term lay-off after a scan confirmed Cork’s worst fears today.

CORK COUNTY BOARD have this afternoon confirmed that Colm O’Neill has suffered a third cruciate ligament injury.

The highly-rated forward sustained the injury in the Leesiders’ win over All-Ireland champions Donegal at Páirc Uí Rinn at the weekend.

“Following a scan today, it has been confirmed that Cork footballer Colm O’Neill suffered damage to his cruciate ligament during Saturday night’s victory over Donegal,” a statement reads.

“The news of this third cruciate injury comes as a huge disappointment to Colm himself, to the Cork team and management and to his club. All in Cork GAA wish him well in his recovery.”

The 24-year-old previously suffered the long-term injury in a club game with Ballyclough in 2008 and again in a national league game with the Rebels in 2011 against Galway.

The news will be a devastating blow for the player who was awarded All-Star last season.

“My worst fears just confirmed today. Cruciate gone again. #disaster #gutted,” he tweeted this afternoon.

Dublin’s young star, Ciarán Kilkenny will be sidelined for  up to six weeks, meanwhile. An MRI scan today revealed the Castleknock man sustained a medial ligament knee sprain in last Saturday night’’s clash with Tyrone at Croke Park. “Thanks for all the messages,” he wrote this afternoon, “very lucky to have only gotten a few weeks thank god , feel for Colm O Neill”.
