Triple Dutch: Dyson cleans up in Holland (again)

Rory McIlroy returns to number three in the world after finishing back in third place.

SIMON DYSON JOINED two of golf’s most famous names as he won the KLM Open for a third time this afternoon.

Only Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer have previously managed the feat, which the Englishman made sure of with a closing round of 66 to finish on 12-under par.

Dyson’s fellow countryman David Lynn — whose only other Tour win came at this event in 2004 – finished one shot back after his eagle putt on the par five 18th trickled by the hole.

After a very positive tournament, a final round of 67 saw Rory McIlroy finish third on ten-under, while Gary Orr and world number one Lee Westwood finished in fourth and fifth respectively.

McIlroy’s performance will see him leapfrog Martin Kaymer and return to number three in the world when the new rankings are released tomorrow.

Try as he might though, the US Open champion couldn’t keep pace with Dyson who started the afternoon one shot ahead of him.

After a bogey on 11 threatened to derail his challenge, a stunning run of form saw Dyson birdie 12, 13, 14 and 18, adding another trophy to a cabinet which already holds this year’s Irish Open title.

“After my bogey on 11 I played pretty flawless golf,” the jubilant champion beamed afterwards.

“The big turning point for me was 13. I hit a good six iron, just pitched on the right hand side of the green, and got a really good bounce and just trickled down to about a foot.

And that was a big turning point, because after, that I played some lovely golf. I hit a good shot into four feet on 14. A good shot into 15, and made a good two putt on 16.

“I gave myself a chance at 17 and then hit a beautiful four iron into the last.”
