Ciaran Whelan unveiled as Irish International Rules selector

Meanwhile Tyrone’s John Devine has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

FORMER DUBS STAR Ciaran Whelan is to be part of the Irish management team for this year’s International Rules Series.

Whelan has been named as a selector by recently-appointed team manager Paul Earley for the two-test series which will take place next October.

Two-time Allstar winner Whelan has plenty experience as a player with Ireland in the hybrid game.

He will be joined in the backroom setup by Tony Scullion and Seamus McCarthy who will also fill the role of selectors.

Scullion was an All-Ireland winner with Derry in 1993 while McCarthy is a former Tipperary football manager.

It has also been confirmed that former Cavan footballer Nicholas Walsh will fill the role of conditioning coach.

Walsh currently works with AFL club Greater Western Sydney in the area of high performance while he was drafted to the Melbourne Demons as an international rookie in 2000. He lined out for Ireland in the 2002 International Rules.

Meanwhile Tyrone’s John Devine has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The 29-year-old Errigal Ciaran goalkeeper broke into the team back in 2002 and went on to win three All-Ireland SFC medals with the Red Hands.

He has competed with Pascal O’Connell for a place between the posts for much of his time with Tyrone but this year has seen Niall Morgan get the nod.

Speaking to tyronegaa.ie, manager Mickey Harte paid tribute to Devine: “As well as being a top goalkeeper, John is a great person.

He has had a tremendous presence within the squad and his influence will be missed.

“John was a vital part of all our All-Ireland successes and I wish him the best for the future as he continues his club career.”
