Moyes: Rooney shouldn't need convincing to play for United

The striker’s future remains uncertain ahead of this weekend’s Community Shield.

MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER David Moyes says Chelsea target Wayne Rooney needs no convincing to stay at Old Trafford.

The United striker has been the subject of ongoing interest from Jose Mourinho’s men, who had a second bid for Rooney rejected on Sunday.

Speaking after his team’s 1-1 draw against Swedish side AIK Fotboll in a friendly, Moyes said he should not have to persuade Rooney to stay at United.

“You don’t have to convince anyone to play for Manchester United,” Moyes said.

“He’s got a shoulder injury, I don’t think it will keep him out very long but he’s got a shoulder injury, which he fell on in the game the other day.”

United have won just two of their six pre-season friendlies and the draw in Sweden came at a cost.

Jonny Evans (ankle) and Nani (groin) were both hurt but Moyes said substituting the duo was a precautionary measure.

“Jonny got kneed in the ankle and it just swelled up a little bit. He was hobbling about a little bit and Nani felt his groin tightening up a little bit in the first half,” Moyes said.

“There wasn’t any real need to take a big risk so we brought them off.”

Moyes said he was pleased key players Nemanja Vidic and Robin van Persie got full games under their belts.

It was a good workout for us. We’ve got three games this weekend so we’re going to try and make sure we utilise all of the players,” the ex-Everton manager said.

“It was good to get some of them 90 minutes tonight, especially Nemanja Vidic and Robin got 90 minutes. For those two especially it was good workout.”

Moyes insists he is unfazed by his team’s indifferent results during pre-season, having lost two of their six matches.

United are yet to keep a clean sheet under Moyes, who believes they are in ‘good shape’.

“We’re getting near the end of pre-season so that means we are getting to the end of it. We’re fine, we’re moving along nicely,” Moyes said.

“The players have been terrific to work with and, no, we’re fine, we’re in good shape.”
