UNLIKE STEVE FINNAN, a significant number of former Ireland internationals have kept quite a high-profile since retiring, with football punditry a particularly popular post-career destination.
However, Finnan is far from the only exception that proves the rule, as the list below illustrates…
1. Tony Galvin
After retiring from football, Galvin — who played for Ireland at Euro 88 — ended up using his degree in Russian Studies for a job with the British civil service.
2. Chris Morris
One of Ireland’s Italia 90 heroes, Chris Morris subsequently went on to work in his family business ‘Morris Pastries,’ and coaches the Bodmin College football team.
3. Clive Clarke
Having earned just two senior caps against Nigeria and Jamaica, Clarke retired prematurely for health reasons. He is now working for a sports management and marketing service.
4. Gareth Farrelly
Farrelly, who made six appearances for Ireland during the Mick McCarthy era, is now training to be a lawyer in Liverpool.
5. Bernie Slaven
Earned seven caps for Ireland and was included in Jack Charlton’s Italia 90 squad. Though he has been relatively quiet since retiring, he did run for the mayor of Middlesbrough at one point.
