WITH THE JOINT-FASTEST time in the world this year and the 10th fastest European women’s 100m run ever, Dina Asher-Smith announced herself on the big stage as she claimed European gold in Berlin this evening.
The 22-year-old Team GB star powered out of the blocks and the chasing pack, notably including Dafne Schippers, were unable to match her searing pace before she crossed the line in 10.85 – a British record as Asher-Smith becomes her country’s first women’s European champ in this event since 1962.
Schippers ended up having to settle for bronze as home favourite Gina Luckenkemper posted a European U23 record of 10.98 to take silver ahead of the Dutch star’s 10.99.
A night of superb GB sprinting was copper-fastened in the men’s 100m final when Zharnel Hughes and Reece Prescod worked their way into a straight race for gold, making a British 1-2 finish inevitable with 20 metres still to run.
Hughes just proved the stronger, inching ahead of his compatriot by one-hundredth of a second to set a Championship record of 9.95 and take gold.
Turkey’s Jak Ali Harvey denied Team GB full control of the podium, running 10.01 to leave Chijindu Ujah fourth despite his season’s best time of 10.06.
