Poll: Cork have unveiled their shortlist to succeed Brian Cuthbert as football boss

There are four men in the race for the Rebel County hot seat.

THERE ARE FOUR candidates in the running to replace Brian Cuthbert as Cork senior football team manager.

John Cleary, Ned English, Ronan McCarthy and Ephie Fitzgerald will battle it out for the Rebel County hot-seat in the coming weeks, with Cleary viewed as the favourite for the role.

Three of the four nominees featured in our list of contenders published in July while English guided divisional outfit Duhallow to a county SFC final appearance in 2012.

Interviews for the position will take place in due course but county board officials now have the shortlist they were looking for.

“It’s at the early stages yet,” PRO Edmond Forrest told The42 this morning.

“After the month of August and with people coming and going with holidays, they’re only at the initial stages of the process.

“They’ll have to work through that and depending on the availability of candidates coming forward and meeting them for interviews, the process will be initiated.”

The appointments committee is made up of county board chairman Ger Lane, secretary Frank Murphy and three former All-Ireland SFC medallists, covering distinct eras.

John Coleman from Millstreet tasted Sam Maguire glory in 1973 and Ballingeary’s John O’Driscoll made substitute appearances in the 1989 and 1990 victories.

Nicholas Murphy from Carrigaline, who retired from intercounty football in 2012, was an Allstar in 2006 and won a Celtic Cross five years ago.

“They’re all All-Ireland medal holders and the geographic representation brings a broader perspective to everything,” Forrest added.

Now it’s time to have your say.

Who do you think should take over the role?
