Marvel comics artist picks his Ireland XI for new mural on show in Cork city centre

Wait, is that Jason McAteer…?

A NEW MURAL in Cork’s city centre is bound to cause so some debate among football fans.

Commissioned by Ireland’s kit sponsors Umbro, it is the work of renowned Irish comics artist Will Sliney, who is famous for his work with Marvel, and depicts a team line-up featuring some of the country’s best ever players.

Legendary names such as Paul McGrath, Roy Keane and Johnny Giles are all there, as is former Liverpool and Sunderland midfielder Jason McAteer – scorer of that goal against the Dutch.

According to The Irish Examiner, Sliney has picked players who have “a great story attached to them” and not an all-time 11. We’d still have had Duffer and Irwin in there in place of Trigger and McCarthy though.

The team is: Packie Bonner, Steve Staunton, Paul McGrath, Richard Dunne, Mick McCarthy, John Giles, Roy Keane, Jason McAteer, Ray Houghton, Niall Quinn, Robbie Keane.
