Champions off to a flyer on a busy day in the Cork senior hurling championship

There were also wins for Sarsfields, Midleton and Blackrock in Cork this weekend.

GLEN ROVERS MADE a winning start to their defence of the Cork senior hurling championship this afternoon.

The city outfit eased to a 0-23 to 0-6 victory over divisional side Carbery. The win was wrapped up by the interval when the Glen led by eight points, having restricted the West Cork men to just a single score in the opening period.

Elsewhere today, two goals from Cork forward Luke O’Farrell helped 2013 champions Midleton to a 2-16 to 0-12 win against Bishopstown. Mark Dolan’s second-half goal proved crucial in Douglas’ 2-18 to 1-18 triumph against Na Piarsaigh.

Jamie Coughlan scored the only goal of the game as Newtownshandrum defeated Killeagh by 1-19 to 0-16, St Finbarr’s needed extra-time to see off newly-promoted Newcestown by 2-15 to 1-15, and Blackrock gained revenge against Ballyhea for a defeat to the North Cork club at the same stage last year as Kevin O’Keeffe led the way with a contribution of 1-12 to their 1-22 to 1-13 victory.

Last night, the 2015 beaten finalists Sarsfields were three-point winners against 2011 champions Carrigtwohill, while in another East Cork affair, Bride Rovers had eight points to spare against Youghal.
