COVENTRY CITY’S LEAGUE One game with Sheffield United was last night disrupted by mass protests by disgruntled home fans as they vented their frustration towards the club’s owners.
On two separate occasions, the referee had to halt proceedings as fans invaded the pitch at the Ricoh Arena in protest against the Sky Blues’ owners, Sisu.
With just four minutes left on the clock, both sets of players had to be taken from the pitch before returning 10 minutes later to play out the remaining time.
Coventry are a club in crisis and face the prospect of relegation to English football’s fourth tier for the first time since 1959 on the back of five successive defeats.
Tony Mowbray resigned as manager in September and the club’s hierarchy have yet to appoint his permanent successor, with long-time assistant Mark Venus currently at the helm.
With the game televised on Sky Sports, supporters used the platform to let their feelings be known as they chanted ‘we want Sisu out’ throughout the 90 minutes while one fan even managed to get past stewards and sit in the centre circle before being forcefully removed.
Sisu took over Coventry in 2007 and the company have presided over one of the worst periods in the club’s history.
Thursday night’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United leaves them with just 19 points after 21 games and sitting inside the relegation zone.
