Gary O'Donovan to carry the Irish flag at Rio closing ceremony

It’s yet another honour for the Skibbereen Rowing Club member.

MEN’S LIGHTWEIGHT DOUBLE sculls silver medallist Gary O’Donovan has been selected as the flag bearer for Ireland during the Rio 2016 closing ceremony on Sunday.

O’Donovan, who along with brother Paul won Ireland’s first-ever rowing medal, will lead the team at the famed Maracana stadium tomorrow evening.

The news was announced by the OCI tonight.

Speaking after the announcement, O’Donovan said:

“It’s an honour to be selected as the flag bearer and to lead Team Ireland out at the Closing Ceremony.

I am extremely proud to carry the flag on behalf of my country, the Olympic Council of Ireland, Irish Rowing and of course Skibbereen Rowing Club.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would like to say a huge thank you to Rio 2016 for their warm hospitality during such an amazing Olympic Games.”
