AFTER THE SOLD out crowds that flocked to Royal County Down in May, the Irish Open’s future has been secured for the next three years.
And as well as securing title sponsors Dubai Duty Free until 2018, the event’s prize money has increased by 60% to €4m, making it one of highest prize funds on the 2016 Race to Dubai, excluding majors and WGC events.
The announcement was made this morning by world number two Rory McIlroy, who will continue to host the event on behalf of his children’s charity The Rory Foundation.
“The Irish Open has always meant so much to me so I’m delighted to announce that myself, on behalf of the Rory Foundation, are going to host the Irish Open sponsored by Dubai Duty Free for the next three years.
As expected, the 2016 tournament will move to the K Club in Kildare following their €20m renovation.
“Last year’s Irish Open at Royal County Down was a huge success and next year’s Irish Open at the K Club in 2016 is, I’m sure, going to be another sell-out. It’s great that it’s going to be held there on the 10th anniversary of the Ryder Cup.
“I’m delighted with the announcement and I can’t wait to see you all there next year,” he said.
The Kildare venue will host the tournament from May 19-22, with reports that Tiger Woods may be convinced to play in the event by McIlroy.
McIlroy’s pull in the world of golf was a major factor in the event’s success in 2015, with Rickie Fowler, Martin Kaymer, Sergio Garcia and Ernie Els joining the large Irish contingent of McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke on the links.
