IRELAND ENDED 53 years of hurt by securing a long overdue victory over Austria this evening.

And the goal itself, which sealed a surprise 1-0 triumph, was quite impressive.

David Meyler showed good composure to play in Wes Hoolahan, and the Norwich star picked out the onrushing James McClean with a sumptuous through pass.

The Derry native subsequently made no mistake with a clinical finish to hand Austria their first home qualification defeat since a September 2012 loss to Germany.
