Morgan Parra, what were you doing?

CLERMONT AUVERGNE CAPTAIN Fritz Lee lamented a lack of discipline that cost his side a spot in the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup.

The French side would have progressed to the next round with a losing bonus point against Bordeaux-Begles, but they failed to realise the significance of a last-minute penalty awarded to them in front of the posts.

Instead of converting, Clermont scrum-half Morgan Parra took a quick tap penalty and the side were held up over the line, meaning their 25-game winning run at home in Europe was ended.

The 37-28 defeat to Bordeaux at the Stade Marcel-Michelin and Exeter Chiefs’ 33-17 win over the Ospreys meant Clermont finished bottom of their pool.

Lee was disappointed with the result and claimed a lack of discipline is the reason they find themselves eliminated from the Cup.

Asked by Sky Sports if he knew his side needed the bonus point, he said: “We knew that in the end. Our discipline let us down towards the end of the game.

“It’s quite disappointing the end result. Obviously we didn’t play smart enough towards the end of the game.

“We scored two tries but we should have played smarter rugby. We should have kicked the ball down and put our chase line down.

“It’s something we have to look at in the game and see what happens.

“We pick ourselves up and focus on Top 14 now.”
