TV3 claims exclusive rights to Cheltenham festival and Aintree Grand National

The broadcaster will be showing the big races from Britain next year, not RTÉ.

TV3 HAS ANNOUNCED a new four-year deal that will see it claim exclusive terrestrial rights to show UK horse racing in Ireland, including the Cheltenham festival and the Aintree Grand National from next year.

The broadcaster announced its partnership with Racecourse Media Group today which means RTÉ will no longer be showing the biggest days in British racing.

Under the agreement TV3 and sister channel 3e will screen racing events for 50 days of the year which also includes the Ivestec Epsom Derby, the Oaks and Royal Ascot.

3e will begin the coverage on New Year’s Day when it broadcasts coverage from Cheltenham.

“TV3 is delighted to be working with this fantastic racing portfolio,” Niall Cogley, TV3′s group director of broadcasting, said in a statement.

“Cheltenham and Aintree are hugely important milestones in the Irish sporting calendar every year, but this new agreement represents so much more as it spans some of the most important international racing fixtures in the world with a wonderful mix of Flat and National Hunt festivals.

“To be able to offer 50 exclusive Irish terrestrial days on TV3 and 3e is great news for our viewers and for the TV3 Group.”

When contacted by The42 RTÉ stated it will continue to screen Irish racing in 2017 including the Galway Festival and action at Punchestown and Fairyhouse, as well as the traditional festive meeting at Leopardstown.
