A tale of two strikers: Torres off the mark as Messi hits 50

The Spanish World Cup winner opens his Chelsea account, while the Argentine becomes the first in Spain to hit the half-ton.

GOING INTO YESTERDAY’S footballing action there were a few main plots in European football:

  • Could Manchester United get three of the ten points they need to confirm their nineteenth Premier League title?
  • Would Lionel Messi reach his total of 50 goals for the season – the first time anyone’s ever done it in Spanish history?
  • Could Fernando Torres finally get off the mark for Chelsea?

The answer to all three was yes – which was all the more remarkable when both strikers involved were only on the bench for their respective games.

Torres scores his first for Chelsea:

Messi scores his 50th for Barca:

Sadly, the former goal means we’ve lost another interesting subplot too – the death of the @HasTorresScored Twitter account… for now…
