Alan Mulholland steps down as Galway manager

It brings the end to his three-year term in charge of the Tribesmen.

THE GALWAY COUNTY BOARD have announced this morning that Alan Mulholland has stepped down as manager of the county’s senior footballers.

Officials say he “has decided not to exercise his option of another year as Galway.”

Mulholland guided a young Galway side to the All-Ireland quarter-finals following a six-year absence this summer, but has opted out of a fourth year in charge of the Tribesmen.

He replaced Tomás Ó Flaharta as Galway boss in the winter of 2011, having delivered minor and U21 glory for the county in 2007 and 2011 respectively. Last month’s appearance in the Connacht final was Galway’s first since 2009.

“Alan’s contribution to Galway football over the years has been both distinguished and significant,” a statement reads.

“Alan was appointed Manager of the Galway senior football team in 2011 and his policy of developing and nurturing young players on the senior team has created a solid foundation for the future.

“Football chairman Tadhg Ó Conghaile thanked Alan, and his back room team, for their dedication and determination over the last three years and he wished them well in the future.”

Mulholland will concentrate on his business as managing director of John Mulholland bookmakers. Former Sligo boss Kevin Walsh is the early favourite with the Galway-based betting company to be named his successor.
