Amir Khan made a right mess of congratulating Michael Conlan on his World gold

It was a great day in Doha for Michael “Tommy” Conlan

I SUPPOSE IT’S the thought that counts.

Michael Conlan made history today by becoming Ireland’s first ever male gold-medallist at the World Boxing Championships, and as soon as his arm was lifted in the ring, the plaudits on Twitter followed.

One boxer who was particularly impressed with the Irishman was 2004 Olympic silver medallist and former WBA and IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan, who was in Doha to watch the championships with the BBC.

Khan was keen to get a snap with the Belfast bantamweight following the triumph, but when he uploaded the picture to Twitter, he made a right hames of it.

While plenty of people make the mistake of spelling his surname “Conlon” rather than Conlan, it was actually his first name that caused Khan the most difficulty.

Either Khan is getting him confused with Tom Hardy’s character from the 2011 film Warrior, or he’s a keen reader of the Sunday Independent.

UPDATE: After realisng the mistake through hundreds of Irish people making jokes about it, Khan corrected his mistake, before making another one.
