Sisters Lisa and Aoife O'Rourke secure at least bronze medals at World Boxing Championships
ROSCOMMON SISTERS LISA and Aoife O’Rourke have secured a bronze medal each at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Serbia.
Lisa became a two-time world medalist after a quarter final victory over Morocco’s Saida Lahmidi in the light-middleweight and will progress to fight the winner of the bout between Serbia and Kazakhstan.
The former world champion, who defeated Azerbaijan’s Emili Rzayeva yesterday, earned a unanimous decision victory in her quarter-final fight. She claimed the first round on three of the judges’ scorecards and five of the judges’ scorecards.
Her sister, four-time European champion and two-time Olympian Aoife, secured a 4-1 split decision in her quarter-final victory over Aziza Zokirova of Uzbekistan in the 75kg category. Four of the judges scored in favour of O’Rourke after the first round, as she gradually took control of the fight throughout the second and third rounds.
She will fight for silver tomorrow against the winners of Serbia and Kazakhstan.
Should the pair succeed in the silver-medal bouts, the finals will be held on Sunday.
