Banty told that new selectors must be Royals

Meath County Board issue statement confirming the resignation of Liam Harnan and Barry Callaghan.

THE HUNT FOR two new selectors for the Meath Senior Football team has begun, with the Royals’ county board insisting that manager Seamus McEnaney choose his new colleagues from those available within the county.

In a statement issued this morning, secretary Cyril Creavin confirmed that both Liam Harnan and Barry Callaghan had resigned their posts as senior team selectors.

The backroom duo indicated their intention to leave last weekend, with reports suggesting that they were unhappy with McEnaney’s decision to recall 38-year-old Graham Geraghty to the panel ahead of Meath’s Leinster SFC opener against Kildare on 5 June.

The county board’s statement thanked Harnan and Callaghan for their service, stating that “we wish to place on record our sincere gratitude for their efforts and commitment since their respective appointments.”

With Armagh native Paul Grimley currently the only remaining member of McEnaney’s staff, and in light of the fact that “Banty” himself was the first non-Royal ever to be appointed to the post, the county board have insisted that the two new selectors come from within County Meath.

A report in today’s Meath Chronicle has indicated that the next meeting of the county board is believed to be scheduled for 13 June, meaning that an extraordinary meeting may have to be called if the new selection team is to be in place ahead of the game against Kildare.
