Retro Deal of the Day

Soccer - FA Carling Premiership - Aston Villa v Sheffield Wednesday EMPICS Sport EMPICS Sport

Having impressed during spells at Ajax, Inter and PSV, former Dutch international Wim Jonk joined Sheffield Wednesday towards the end of his career in 1998 for a fee of £2.5 million.

It was a controversial switch, however. Wednesday agreed to give the injury-troubled player £5,000-per-game appearance money, prompting anger among the club’s supporters.

With 11 goals in 49 appearances for Holland at international level including the second in a 2-0 last-16 ’94 World Cup win over Ireland, Jonk arrived at Hillsborough with high hopes.

However, he could not help prevent the club’s Premier League relegation in the 1999-2000 season, before announcing his retirement shortly thereafter.

Since then, Jonk has stayed in football, recently working in the Ajax youth academy, though he left the club in 2015 following a technical dispute.
