Brazilian newspapers have some fun after England's result against Uruguay

Daily publication Lance! goes for the Abbey Road parody and nails it. But Roy Hodgson as John Lennon?

FOLLOWING ENGLAND’S DEFEAT to Uruguay last night, many UK newspapers focused on Luis Suarez’s influence rather than offer up any damning criticism of Roy Hodgson’s side.

The Brazilian media took a slightly different strategy and were a little more creative in what they put together.

Sports paper ‘Lance’ went for a nice parody of The Beatles’ famous Abbey Road album cover with Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Roy Hodgson taking the place of the original Fab Four. An interesting choice.

Going by the daily’s interpretation, Hodgson is John Lennon, Rooney is Ringo Starr, Gerrard is Paul McCartney and Sturridge is George Harrison.

Of course, historically, conspiracy theorists believe McCartney had died before the cover was photographed and that’s why his ‘replacement’ is captured in bare feet and out of step with the rest on the album’s sleeve. In fact, widening the entire thing out further, many have proclaimed the Abbey Road shoot as a metaphor for a funeral. There’s Lennon dressed in white – symbolising the preacher. There’s Ringo in black – the chief mourner. Harrison, in scruffy denims, is the gravedigger.

So, keeping that logic, was last night Steven Gerrard’s funeral?
