Charlie Smyth faces fresh competition as New Orleans Saints set to sign new kicker
CHARLIE SMYTH IS facing fresh competition at the New Orleans Saints, with free agent kicker Daniel Carlson reportedly set to join the squad.
NFL reporter Mike Garafolo broke the news on X, writing: “The Saints are signing two-time All-Pro K [kicker] Daniel Carlson, his agents at RangeSportsRMP tell me.
“The former #Raiders kicker brings experience to New Orleans, which had been holding a competition between Tanner Brown and Charlie Smyth.”
Carlson is a two-time All-Pro (2021 and 2022) and will come in to challenge Smyth, who was the Saints’ starting kicker last season, cementing his place after Blake Grupe was cut.
Down native Smyth joined the Saints via the International Player Pathway in 2024. Last season he featured in six games, making 12 of 16 field goals.
Carlson, 31, started his NFL career at the Minnesota Vikings in 2018, before moving to the LA Raiders later that year. Kicker Tanner Brown is also on the Saints’ books, having joined in June.
