A LONG-RUMOURED biopic on the late WWE star Chris Benoit is going ahead, it has been confirmed.
Lexi Alexander, director of Punisher: War Zone, is set to direct a script written by Jake Goldberger and Sarah Coulter.
The project is based on a book, Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit & the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry, written by Matthew Randazzo, who will also serve as an executive producer on the film.
The movie, ‘Crossface,’ takes its title from Brenoit’s signature crippler crossface move.
Benoit, a former WWE World Heavyweight champion, murdered his wife and son before taking his own life at the age of 40 in 2007.
The Canadian wrestler was posthumously diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive degenerative disease, which is caused by severe or repeated blows to the head.
“I was pretty certain I’d stay in TV rather than returning to the feature world, because the material just seems so much better in TV, especially in drama, but then ‘Crossface’ came my way,” Alexander told reporters. “A heartbreaking, true story about the dark side of wrestling… I couldn’t say no to that.”
There has been no confirmation yet of any actors attached to the project.
