Club Call: Nemo and Barrs to clash in Cork senior football championship

A city derby between old football rivals is the highlight of the Cork senior championship fourth round draws.

THE MEETING OF traditional heavyweights St Finbarr’s and Nemo Rangers is the glamour tie in the fourth round draw of the Cork senior football championship which was made earlier this evening.

The southside city rivals, who met in the 2010 senior decider where Nemo Rangers triumphed by 2-10 to 1-8, have 26 county senior football titles between them and will meet in the last sixteen of this year’s competition. The meeting of Bishopstown and Clonakilty, a repeat of the 2009 semi-final, Carbery Rangers and Ballincollig, who have met frequently in recent seasons, and last year’s finalists Castlehaven against Newcestown in an all West Cork pairing are other notable ties on the agenda.

The fourth round draw and the quarter-final ties in full are as follows:

Fourth Round: Carbery Rangers v Ballincollig; Bishopstown v Clonakilty; Castlehaven v Newcestown; St Finbarr’s v Nemo Rangers; Avondhu v Ilen Rovers/Na Piarsaigh; O’Donovan Rossa v Aghada/St Nicholas; Duhallow v Dohenys; Douglas v Newmarket.
Quarter-Finals: Carbery Rangers/Ballincollig v Bishopstown/Clonakilty; Castlehaven/Newcestown v St Finbarr’s/Nemo Rangers; Avondhu/Ilen Rovers/Na Piarsaigh v O’Donovan Rossa/Aghada/St Nicholas; Duhallow/Dohenys v Douglas/Newmarket.

The hurling draw was also made this evening with reigning champions Carrigtwohill set to face the winners of the third round tie between Glen Rovers and Cloyne. Last year’s beaten finalists, the third-level outfit Cork IT will play St Finbarr’s, there will be an all South-East tie between the last two county premier intermediate champions Ballymartle and Courcey Rovers while Newtownshandrum and Na Piarsaigh, both champions over the past decade, will also face off.

Fourth Round: Cork IT v St Finbarr’s; Killeagh v Erins Own; Carrigtwohill v Glen Rovers/Cloyne; Blackrock/Bride Rovers v Sarsfields; Newtownshandrum v Na Piarsaigh; Ballymartle v Courcey Rovers; Midleton v Avondhu; Douglas v Bishopstown.

The draws for the premier intermediate and intermediate championships in Cork were also made tonight.
