League of Ireland cult hero makes 11th move of his career

Ex-Irish international Conor Sammon has joined Motherwell on a season-long loan.

FORMER IRELAND INTERNATIONAL Conor Sammon has joined Motherwell on a season-long loan, the club have confirmed.

The 31-year-old has been allowed leave by parent club Hearts, having spent last season on loan at Partick Thistle, scoring 10 goals in 37 appearances for the side but ultimately the Dubliner was unable to prevent his struggling team from being relegated after losing a play-off with Livingston.

Sammon began his career in the League of Ireland with UCD and has moved 11 times (including six loan spells) over the course of his career.

After impressing with Derry City, he joined Kilmarnock before a brief spell in the Premier League with Wigan.

He also won nine Ireland caps, with his last appearance for the national side coming in 2013.

“I’m just looking forward to getting stuck in here, playing a lot of games, scoring a lot of goals, and just being a part of a successful season,” he said.

“I think the other strikers in the squad are similar. They’re physical, strong and quick, so I definitely think I can fit in here and I think my style of play will help me to have a good season here.

“And I’m looking forward to that, to training with the lads and to getting familiar with each other and how we play.”

“I’m delighted to have added Conor to our squad,” manager Stephen Robinson added.

“I’ve been keen to add another option in the striking department and he will fit our style of play perfectly.”
