The contenders for Cork’s first choice full-back

Friday’s team selection will be revealing of Ben O’Connor’s preferred option.

THE CORK NO 3 jersey has been associated with iconic figures down through the years.

With the position seemingly up for grabs, the Rebels aren’t short of potential full-back options. Friday’s team selection is set to be revealing of Ben O’Connor’s preference for the year ahead in this crucial position that is still uncertain in the eyes of many supporters.

Here are the contenders:

Dáire O’Leary (Watergrasshill)

A powerful operator and skilful distributor, Dáire O’Leary was cast for the full-back role from his reintroduction to the panel. His work as a Garda in Kildare had led him to take the previous year out after an extended club campaign saw Watergrasshill crowned All-Ireland Intermediate champions.

The two-time All-Ireland U20 winner started the first five league games, finishing two. Limerick full-forward Shane O’Brien gave him plenty of hassle, rounding the defender for an early goal. Whether that outing will cost O’Leary or if such exposure will bring him on remains to be seen.

Ciarán Joyce (Castlemartyr)

The classy defender has been dubbed ‘Rolls Royce Joyce’ and collected his first All-Star last year. Burst onto the scene as a ball-playing centre-back and has featured on the wing in recent years. After a tough start to the Munster final, getting to grips with his Cian Lynch man-marking assignment helped Cork to gain a vital foothold.

O’Connor has explained that he would have played Joyce at full-back sooner than the final round against Offaly, only for the trial to be postponed by injuries. Brian Duignan clipped a couple of points, although the Cork net was never really threatened. It would be sink or swim time with back-to-back clashes with Limerick ahead.

Eoin Downey (Glen Rovers)

The 22-year-old has a prize none of the rest have, an All-Star award at full-back. Since that 2024 campaign, there have been rockier times for Downey, who was sent off when conceding a penalty to John McGrath in the 2025 final.

O’Connor has repositioned him for a half-back line role, starting and finishing five successive games between the 5 and 6 jerseys. His long-range point-scoring, best exhibited against Tipperary, is better exploited in that area of the pitch.

Robert Downey (Glen Rovers)

The elder Downey brother has become a defensive rock for Cork since the 2024 campaign at centre-back. His deep-lying role shields the full-back and provides an imposing presence for the opposition puck-out to avoid. He would be missed at six, but with Joyce as an alternative, could he prove Cork’s best full-back?

With Downey Jnr alongside him, it’s a crowded field of four All-Star holders for three half-back line berths. Cormac O’Brien adds extra depth in that department. If O’Connor wishes to move one of those half-back specialists, Rob’s position is closest of all to the 3 jersey, which he previously filled going back to the 2021 All-Ireland final.

AN Other

Damien Cahalane has previously deputised for Eoin Downey, such as in the latter portion of the All-Ireland final, and started in the Munster final victory over Limerick. However, previous runs in the full-back jersey haven’t seen him clinch the gig.

Eoin Roche was full-back on the All-Ireland U20-winning team of 2020. He hasn’t yet nailed down a senior starting spot.

In the era of two-man full-forward lines, perhaps full-back doesn’t have to be a specialist designation. Ger Millerick started Cork’s two marquee league games against Tipp and Limerick and carries sufficient experience.
