Division 1 FL: Cork consign Tyrone to first league defeat

Conor Counihan’s side enjoyed a successful trip up to Healy Park in Omagh this afternoon.

Cork 0-14
Tyrone 0-8

COLM O’NEILL KICKED 0-5 as Cork ensured Tyrone suffered their first defeat of this year’s spring league campaign in Healy Park in Omagh this afternoon.

Conor Counihan’s side enjoyed a successful trip to Ulster for the second successive week after defeating Down with a last-gasp goal from Ciaran Sheehan last Sunday.

Sheehan’s involvement in this clash was ended early when he had to come off with a shoulder injury during the first-half as Donncha O’Connor was introduced to the Cork attack.

Yet the Rebels still managed to fashion a convincing victory over Mickey Harte’s side as they maintained their recent upswing in form after having lost their first two matches against Dublin and Kildare.

The first-half was an evenly-contested affair for long stages with Sean Cavanagh’s 25th minute point leaving Tyrone 0-5 to 0-4 in arrears. But Cork increased the tempo before the break with Aidan Walsh, O’Connor and Paul Kerrigan all landing points to send them four clear the interval.

Cork maintained their dominance in the second half with another Walsh point in the 51st minute sending them into a 0-11 to 0-5 lead. Tyrone’s accuracy in front of goal deserted them as they chalked up 13 wides overall and Cork finished strongly to claim a six-point success ahead of next Saturday’s meeting in Páirc Uí Rinn with Donegal, their conquerors in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final,
