ORGANISERS HAVE CONFIRMED that the 40th Ryder Cup will take place from 26-28 September 2014 in Gleneagles, Pertshire.
The biennial contest between Europe and America’s golfers was awarded to the Scottish course ten years ago but exact dates for the sporting showpiece were not revealed until this morning.
Upwards of 250,000 spectators are expected to attend the 2014 tournament which will be played on Gleneagles Hotel’s famous PGA Centenary Course, designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus.
In preparation for 2014, course staff have already started work on a number of small modifications which they hope will make the tournament one of the most exciting yet.
Speaking at the announcement this morning, Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond said: “As the home of golf, Scotland is well placed to host the best Ryder Cup in the competition’s history when it arrives at Gleneagles in 2014.
During the week of The Ryder Cup itself, the Scottish economy is expected to benefit by up to £100m, as visitors flock from across the globe to experience superb golf on one of the best courses in the world.
The 2014 Ryder Cup marks only the second time that the event has been staged in Scotland, which also played host in 1973.
Europe currently holds the cup following a 14.5-13.5 victory at Celtic Manor in Wales last October. The 2012 renewal will take place at Medinah Country Club in Illinois next September.
