Doyle targets Nations Cup return

Irish striker is likely to miss Wolves’ Premiership run-in, however.

KEVIN DOYLE MAY have inadvertently stoked the embers of the club versus country debate this morning, suggesting that he will sit out the remainder of Wolves’ league campaign in an attempt to be fit for international duty.

The Republic of Ireland striker damaged the medial ligaments in his left knee during the first half of Ireland’s 2-1 win over FYR Macedonia last month with club doctors indicating that he would be out of action for up to two months.

With Ireland facing a crunch Euro 2012 visit to Skopje on June 4, it was feared that the injury may prevent Doyle’s participation, a problem made more serious when Newcastle United striker Leon Best was also ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

However, speaking to Sky Sports this morning, the 27-year-old hinted that he should be ready to return to action as early as May 24 when Ireland welcome Northern Ireland to the Aviva Stadium for the second game of the Carling Nations Cup.

“If I don’t play for Wolves again this season, I don’t suppose the manager will be too happy to see me get fit and disappear for my country,” said Doyle.

But,  he added, “I’m going to try to make it.”
