Dublin too strong for DCU in O'Byrne Cup clash

Jim Gavin’s side made it two wins from two in Group B of the pre-season provincial competition.

Dublin 3-16
DCU 1-11

Dublin continued their unbeaten start to the season with an 11-point success over DCU in tonight’s O’Byrne Cup clash in Parnell Park.

Following on from their Group B victory over Carlow in last Sunday’s opener, Dublin gained another success against their third-level opponents.

Goals from Denis Bastick, Diarmuid Connolly and Kevin McManamon helped secure the spoils for Jim Gavin’s team.

They registered 1-4 without reply in the closing stages to add gloss to their triumph against a DCU team that finished up with 14 men after the dismissal of corner-back William Lowry.

Dublin started the game strongly and were full value for the 0-6 to 0-1 advantage they enjoyed by the 17th minute.

Paul Hudson, a member of last year’s All-Ireland U21 winning team, shone during that period as he displayed impressive accuracy in front of goal in landing points.

His more illustrious attacking colleagues Bernard Brogan and Diarmuid Connolly were also showing up well to help Dublin gain control.

But DCU fought back into contention with Ballymun Kickhams star Dean Rock leading the way and despite only getting a point from his penalty effort in the 23rd minute, they were only 0-6 to 0-4 adrift at that juncture.

Dublin looked to have struck a decisive blow just before the interval when midfielder Denis Bastick got forward to finish to the net after Brogan’s initial shot had been blocked.

Yet DCU were still in touch at the interval as they only trailed by 1-7 to 1-5 after Longford’s Michael Quinn did brilliantly to find the net when he stormed forward from his centre-back role.

The second-half was initially evenly contested with Connolly sweeping a penalty to the net in the 40th minute before DCU responded with a flurry of points as Paul Flynn and Rock showed the way.

But the closest DCU got to their opponents was two points, when it was 2-9 to 1-10 after 51 minutes.

And Dublin proved too strong in the closing stages with their strength in depth being illustrated as McManamon raised their third green flag of the game while Robbie McCarthy and Gary Sweeney both notched points.
