Guiney rescues draw for Wexford against Dublin in Leinster SHC

The teams finished all square tonight in Wexford Park.

Dublin 1-17
Wexford 1-17

A LAST GASP Jack Guiney pointed free rescued a draw for Wexford against Dublin in tonight’s Leinster senior hurling championship quarter-final in Wexford Park.

The Rathnure youngster held his cool to convert the free and bring his personal tally on the night to 1-8 after substitute Gary Moore had been fouled in the 71st minute.

Moments before Dublin substitute Paul Ryan looked to have fired over the winning point at a sun-splashed Wexford Park venue yet the home side kept their provincial campaign alive thanks to Guiney’s pointed free.

The standard of hurling on the night was not sparkling yet the game provided immense entertainment. For long stretches of the second-half Wexford looked like they were going to close out the game as they dominated the exchanges.

Jack Guiney and Garreth Sinnott shone in attack for Wexford and they were 1-15 to 0-15 clear with five minutes remaining. But then Dublin pointed through wing-back Michael Carton, the man-of-the-match on the night, and they got a massive boost when substitutes Mark Schutte and Eamonn Dillon combined for Dillon to whip the ball to the net.

Sinnott leveled the teams again before Ryan shot over for Dublin and it was Guiney who had the final say with that pointed free for Wexford.

First-Half

Dublin had exploded from the blocks in the first-half with Joey Boland’s brilliant free taking and Danny Sutcliffe’s superb marksmanship from play propelling them into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead.

But Wexford fought back to steadily chip away at that advantage and they hit the front courtesy of a brilliant Jack Guiney goal in the 31st minute. He rifled the ball to the roof of the net off his left-hand side after a terrific run forward by Eoin Quigley created the chance.

Points by Boland and Sutcliffe edged Dublin in front by 0-12 to 1-8 at the interval and they stayed in front early in the second-half with Boland’s 47th minute free seeing them move ahead by 0-15 to 1-10.

However then Wexford got a grip on the game to shoot five points without reply and Dublin’s shooting let them down frequently in front of goal. Dublin went 19 minutes without scoring but a late burst placed them on the cusp of glory before Guiney’s intervention ensured the teams will replay next Saturday night with Parnell Park the likely venue.
