ZAMBIA WON THEIR first Africa Cup of Nations title in a dramatic penalty shootout against Ivory Coast, sparking emotional celebrations as they dedicated the win to the victims of the 1993 plane crash near Libreville.
Arsenal striker Gervinho missed the decisive penalty for Ivory Coast, shooting high and wide before Stophira Sunzu scored to give the Chipolopolo an 8-7 win on penalties at the end of 120 scoreless minutes.
Didier Drogba had a chance to atone for the penalty he missed in the shootout to decide the 2006 final, won by Egypt, but blazed his spot kick in the 70th minute over Kennedy Mweene’s bar.
The Chelsea man held his nerve to convert in the shootout, before misses from Kolo Touré and Gervinho condemned the Elephants to a second final defeat in six years.
Zambia’s win was a fairytale finale, as the players unfurled a banner commemorating the 1993 airplane disaster. Thirty people, including 18 players, were killed when an aircraft carrying the Zambian national team to a World Cup qualifier in Senegal crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Libreville.
Coach Herve Renard — former manager of Cambridge United — carried the injured Joseph Musonda to join his team-mates in their celebrations, before the Frenchman led Zambia in their own version of the Maori Haka.
It was a first win at the tournament in 14 appearances for Zambia, who finished as runners-up in 1974 and again in 1994.
