GAA Weekend: Gooch dominant as Kerry ease past Galway

Missed the weekend’s National Football League action? Catch up with the main details here.

National Football League Division 1

Kerry 0-16 Galway 0-08 A tremendous individual display from Colm Cooper was the highlight of Kerry’s win over Galway in Killarney yesterday. The Dr Crokes man scored eight points – six of which came from play – as Jack O’Connor’s men won convincingly.

Mayo 1-10 Armagh 2-10 Though he didn’t make it onto the scoresheet, Billy Joe Padden’s return to McHale Park yesterday was a happy one. First-half goals from Brian Mallon and Paul Duffy gave the Orchard a five-point half-time lead, presenting Mayo with too steep an obstacle to overcome in the second period.

Monaghan 1-09 Dublin 0-13 In beating Monaghan in Clones yesterday, Pat Gilroy’s Dublin weren’t as impressive as they have been to date. They still clung on for a single-score victory though despite being reduced to 14 when Diarmuid Connolly was sent off for a second yellow ten minutes from time.

Cork 3-17 Down 0-15 Pearse O’Neill, Patrick Kelly and Colm O’Neill brought their scoring boots to Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday night, their goals giving Cork an 11-point victory in a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland Final.

National Football League Division 2

Meath 0-09 Donegal 0-15 Donegal maintained their unbeaten start to the season as six points from Michael Murphy helped them to a comfortable win over divisional strugglers Meath. With only one win from four, Seamus McEnaney’s men know that next week’s game against Kildare is a must-win if they are to drag themselves out of relegation trouble.

Sligo 0-08 Derry 0-11 The first-half sending-off of Eoin Bradley didn’t damage Derry’s chances too severely as they battled to a three-point victory over winless Sligo at Markievicz Park.

Tyrone 1-16 Antrim 1-11 Justin and Joe McMahon both made their first league appearances of the season for Tyrone as the Red Hand’s strong second-half performance gave them a five-point win.

Kildare 1-13 Laois 1-11 A late flurry of points by Kildare saw them steal this one at the death, condemning Laois to a first defeat of the season.

National Football League Division 3

Louth 0-11 Offaly 1-09 League-leaders Louth fell to their first defeat of their season with Ciaran McNamee’s penalty proving to be the crucial difference.

Westmeath 1-07 Wexford 0-13 Offaly’s win meant that Wexford have pulled themselves back into contention for the Division 3 title. Their three-point win at Cusack Park yesterday means that there’s now a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard.

Other results: Waterford 2-8 Tipperary 0-9; Limerick 2-14 Cavan 0-15

National Football League Division 4

Clare 5-10 London 0-4 Can a team win by 21 points and still be disappointed? Clare might be – despite demolishing London at Cusack Park yesterday, they were incredibly wasteful, shooting 17 wides.

Kilkenny 3-01 Carlow 2-21 One would have to wonder about the tactics employed by Kilkenny’s footballers at Nowlan Park yesterday. In 70 minutes, they only managed four scores, three of which were goals. We know the hurling coaches were taking some tips from Arsenal last week – but are the footballers now trying to walk the ball into the goal?

Other results: Wicklow 2-09 Longford 1-12; Roscommon 1-12 Fermanagh 1-09;
