Division 2 FL: Westmeath, Galway and Wexford triumph

John Heslin was to the fore for Westmeath, Michael Meehan netted for Galway and Wexford were also victorious.

Laois 1-8

WESTMEATH REMAIN ON top of Division 2 after claiming a two-point victory over Laois this afternoon in Mullingar.

Late points from John Heslin and Dessie Dolan secured the spoils for Pat Flanagan’s side against a Laois team that finished with 14 men after Brendan Quigley was sent-off.

Laois lead by 1-6 to 1-3 at the break with Gary Walsh finding the net for them while MJ Tierney and Ross Munnelly were amongst their point-scorers.

John Heslin raised the green flag for Westmeath from the penalty spot and in the second-half he notched some vital points to help his side claim a significant win in their drive for promotion.

Galway 3-11
Longford 3-7

GALWAY ARE BACK in the promotion mix after a four-point win over Longford in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this afternoon.

Alan Mulholland saw his team triumph in a game that saw Longford suffer their fourth defeat of this Division 2 campaing.

Galway lead 1-6 to 1-5 at the break with Michael Meehan notching their goal while Donal McElligott raised the green flag for Longford.

Glenn Ryan’s side got a significant boost in the second-half when Sean McCormack found the net twice but Eoin Concannon and Paul Conroy hit back with goals for Galway that proved significant in the end.

Louth 2-9

WEXFORD ENJOYED A rewarding trip to Drogheda today as they had four points to spare over 14-man Louth.

The Model County got off to a dream start when Shane Roche and Paddy Byrne registered goals inside the opening ten minutes.

But Louth fought back with Shane Lennon finding the net and with Paddy Keenan showing gret leadership, they were ahead 1-7 to 2-2 at the break.

Louth’s prospects were further boosted in the second-half when Conor Rafferty hit the net for them and they enjoyed a 2-8 to 2-4 lead.

However they suffered a setback when Shane Lennon was shown his second yellow card of the game and Wexford kicked on for victory with Roche and PJ Banville on target up front.
