Ian Rush: Liverpool must keep the faith with Luis Suarez

“I think you’ve got to be positive and look at what he’s done,” said the former Kop favourite.

LIVERPOOL GREAT IAN Rush believes the club should hold on to Luis Suarez despite the latest controversy in the striker’s career.

The Uruguayan has dominated the headlines for the wrong reasons once again after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at Anfield on Sunday.

Suarez, who was banned by the Dutch FA for biting during his time at Ajax and was also suspended for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra last season, is now facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines. While some observers have called for Liverpool to part ways with the incident-prone forward, Rush feels the player’s contrition should afford him some leeway.

“I think you’ve got to be positive and look at what he’s done,” said Rush. “He’s apologised for what he’s done and he’s being dealt with by the FA.

“From Liverpool’s point of view, he’ll be dealt with internally and that’s the way to keep it, inside. We’ve got to wait for the FA, let’s see what action they take on it.”

Suarez has scored 30 goals in 44 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season. He has helped Liverpool to seventh in the English Premier League table, but they are 11 points outside the top four as they prepare for the final four matches of the 2012/13 campaign.

Even UEFA Europa League qualification appears out of Liverpool’s reach this term, however Rush expects Brendan Rodgers’ side to be pushing for a UEFA Champions League spot next season.

“I think it’s to finish in the top four,” he said when asked what Liverpool’s objectives should be in 2013/14. “Wherever we finish this season, hopefully we’re in Europe, but I think if you look at the young players, they’ll be a year more experienced now and they’ll know what to expect.

“They’ll need to improve themselves and if you get one or two more experienced ones in there, I think, without doubt, we’re capable of finishing in the top four.”
