Dear Irish fans, 7 things you really need to stop doing in 2016

Go out there and make sure you stay ‘the best fans in the world’

IT’S SET TO be a big 12 months ahead for Irish sport. We’re headed for a Six Nations, The Olympic Games, Euro 2016 and world title defences in MMA and boxing. So let’s make sure, as a nation, we go out there and give a great account of ourselves. Deal?

That means, trying to live by this simple code, based on previous pitfalls many of us have fallen into.

1. You don’t have to love the opposition, but even a tiny bit of respect would be nice…

Of all the embarrassing ‘questions’ at UFC 189′s Dublin ‘press conference’, this penultimate effort was the most disgustingly nonsensical. I mean, is it not an insult to both men?

2. Mexican waves

When the waves start, you know people have stopped watching the game. Please, Irish fans, PLEASE! Don’t get up unless you’re going to sing or shout.

3. Keep public decency laws in mind

Euro 2012 were wild times in Poland, but in France how about targeting a level of lovemaking more inkeeping with our suave and debonair hosts.

4. In fact, our whole approach to romance could do with a refresher course

That’s a hell of a choice for Bantamweight champ Holly Holm, she’s probably still mulling it over.

5. Cheering the replacement of your own player – it’s just not on, lads.

It’s okay to be frustrated and groan at dropped balls or missed opportunities, but a section of Munster supporters let themselves down a bagful in December.

 6. When you’re heading to that big sporting event overseas, GAA jerseys are not obligatory.

Glad we could clear that up.

7. If  you can’t do any of that, let’s at least try to get the name of the competition right
