Jamie Carragher: Liverpool are right to stand by Luis Suarez

The Anfield defender says Suarez needs to be helped rather than hounded out of the Premier League.

JAMIE CARRAGHER HAS defended Liverpool’s decision to support Luis Suarez after the striker’s latest bout of controversy.

The Uruguayan international will today learn the outcome of the FA disciplinary procedure after he bit Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic during Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Although referee Kevin Friend took no action at the time of the incident, Suarez is expected to face a lengthy ban and has already been hit with a hefty fine from his club. However, while not condoning his team-mate’s behaviour, Carragher has rubbished claims the 26-year-old should be sacked and called for him to be offered support.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, the former England international noted: “Luis knows he has done something seriously wrong, letting himself down … but, rather than hounding him out of the country, shouldn’t we be helping him?”

Carragher went on to say that even though Suarez’s bite was “shocking”, a sense of perspective is needed as the incident was not as bad as some of the dangerous play that takes place in matches.

“I know what it is like to have your leg broken by a reckless tackle … would I have preferred to have been bitten? Absolutely,” he added.
