History maker! Egan bags bronze to deliver Ireland's first world championship canoe sprint medal

Jenny Egan claimed a bronze medal in a time of 24:15.075.

IRELAND’S JENNY EGAN claimed a bronze medal at the ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships in Portugal this weekend.

It’s the first time that Ireland has won a medal at this event, with Egan earning a third-place finish in the K1 5000m.

Egan — who missed out on qualification for the London and Rio Olympic Games by the narrowest of margins — finished in a time of  24:15.075 to secure the bronze medal.

She came in 13.338 behind the winner Lizzie Broughton of Great Britain who clocked a time of 24:01.737, while Maryna Litvinchuk took the silver medal in a time of 24:12.014.

In 2017, Egan claimed her second canoe sprint World Cup gold medal by defending her K1 5,000 metres crown from the previous year.
