Melbourne FC unveil giant Jim Stynes statue

The bronze sculpture has been erected outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

LEGENDARY IRISH AUSSIES rules footballer Jim Stynes has been remembered by his former club Melbourne FC with a statue.

The Dubliner, who joined the club as a teenager before going on to make 264 appearances during a glittering career, passed away in March 2012 after a long battle with cancer. After his playing days, Stynes also spent time as assistant coach and club president.

Today, the club unveiled the one-and-a-half times life-sized bronze sculpture outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“Jimmy was a man of great dignity, a man who was selfless in what he achieved, who gave so much back to not only football… It’s a remarkable story,” said former team-mate Lyon.

“Now to have a statue of Jimmy here at the best sporting ground in the world, I think it’s an unbelievable story.”
