Leader of the pack: Doyle returns as Lilywhites captain

John Doyle has been reappointed as captain of the Kildare senior footballers for 2012.

KIERAN MCGEENEY has reappointed All-Star forward John Doyle to captain the Kildare senior footballers for 2012.

The Lilywhites veteran returns for a third successive season as team captain while his deputy, Eamonn Callaghan, will also continue on as vice-captain.

Callaghan captained Kildare in Doyle’s absence for Sunday’s O’Byrne Cup win over DIT, and McGeeney confirmed after the game that both players would remain on in their respective roles for the coming campaign.

Doyle, 34,  first took over the captain’s armband in 2010, a season in which he won an All-Star as he led Kildare to an All-Ireland semi-final.

He led the team again in 2011 despite suffering a number of injuries, but could do nothing to prevent Kildare crashing out against Donegal in a gripping All-Ireland quarter-final.

Kildare open their quest for promotion to the National Football League Division 1 with a game against Tyrone on 4 February.
