AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Clare v Dublin, All-Ireland SHC Qualifier Round Two

Clare and Dublin went head-to-head in Cusack Park to extend their 2012 championship campaign tonight. Here’s how it unfolded.

They won All-Ireland medals together as players but now Davy Fitzgerald and Anthony Daly are in the management game.

Fitzgerald is at the helm of his native Clare as they welcomed Daly’s Dublin side to the Ennis venue for tonight’s crunch qualifier showdown.

Here’s the Clare team for this evening’s encounter.

CLARE: Patrick Kelly (Inagh/Kilnamona); Domhnall O’Donovan (Clonlara), Cian Dillon (Crusheen), Conor Cooney (O’Callaghan Mills); Brendan Bugler (Whitegate), Patrick Donnellan (O’Callaghan Mills), Nicky O’Connell (Clonlara); Seadna Morey (Sixmilebridge), Sean Collins (Cratloe); Fergal Lynch (Clooney-Quin), Jonathan Clancy (Clarecastle), Tony Kelly (Ballyea); John Conlon (Clonlara), Conor McGrath (Cratloe), Darach Honan (Clonlara).

It’s an interesting team selection by Clare with five changes from the Munster semi-final defeat to Waterford. Last year’s minor stars Seadna Morey and Tony Kelly, who just finished his Leaving Cert recently, are both set to make their starting championship debuts. Sean Collins, Fergal Lynch and Darach Honan are the other newcomers to the team. James McInerney, Patrick O’Connor, Enda Barrett, Paudge Collins and Colin Ryan are the players to make way.

No confirmed team news from Dublin yet. But the speculation is that Conal Keaney and Conor McCormack will both miss out through injury with Maurice O’Brien and Alan McCrabbe coming in to replace them. Here’s all you need to know about tonight’s game.

We’ll be keeping an eye on tonight’s other qualifier tie as well with Cork facing Offaly in Páirc Uí Chaoimh at 7pm. Here’s a guide to that clash.

Here’s the confirmed Dublin team for tonight’s match.

DUBLIN: G Maguire; T Brady, P Kelly, N Corcoran; M Carton, J Boland, R Treanor; J McCaffrey, M O’Brien; R O’Dwyer, D Sutcliffe, L Rushe; P Ryan, D Treacy, A McCrabbe.

We’re about to get underway and clearly neither manager has been afraid to change things up in the wake of their provincial championship exits. Who will be rewarded for their changes?

Clare 0-1 Dublin 0-0: It’s Clare who start quickest with John Conlon bursting onto loose possession and firing over the bar. Conor McGrath has a chance to add another point but his effort tails wide. 2 minutes elapsed.

There’s a delay at the moment as Clare defender Nicky O’Connell is receiving treatment after getting a knock when challenging Dublin’s Ryan O’Dwyer for possession.

Clare 0-3 Dublin 0-0: Nicky O’Connell is back on his feet and Clare get a boost at the other end when teenager Tony Kelly, on his championship debut, fires over the bar after good work by John Conlon to create the opening. Then Conor McGrath is fouled and he dusts himself down to convert the free and put his team ahead by three points after six minutes.

Clare 0-3 Dublin 0-1: An important point to settle Dublin’s challenge. Paul Ryan converts a ’65 for their first score of the game but Clare have started the brighter all over the pitch.

It’s a 0-2 apiece early on in tonight’s other qualifier tie between Cork and Offaly in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Clare 0-3 Dublin 0-3: Dublin draw level through a combination of David Treacy’s ball winning abilities that see him being fouled twice in quick succession by the Clare defence and Paul Ryan converting the resultant free on both occasions. 12 minutes gone in Ennis.

Dublin 0-4 Clare 0-3: Again Treacy is fouled and Ryan splits the posts for the fourth time in the match. Clare’s defence are starting to concede cheap frees where Dublin’s rearguard look cohesive and well-disciplined so far.

Goal for Colin Egan for Offaly has pushed them into a 1-4 to 0-4 lead against Cork.

Dublin 0-5 Clare 0-5: We’re level gain. Dublin’s Paul Ryan is harnessing the breeze effectively when it comes to striking his frees and he converts another one from distance. The ball dipped at the last minute and goalkeeper Patrick Kelly needed to be vigilant to deflect that over the bar. At the other end Clare get a vital score, their first in ten minutes, courtesy of Darach Honan who is battling back after a long injury lay-off and then John Conlon grabs his second point of the match.

Dublin 0-7 Clare 0-5: Paul Ryan has been flawless to date and he despatches another free between the posts. Then Danny Sutcliffe raises their first white flag from play to stretch Dublin’s advantage to two. That last score arrived after a poor short puck out by Patrick Kelly in the Clare goal. 20 minutes gone.

There’s been another goal in Páirc Uí Chaoimh with Patrick Horgan finding the net for Cork. That edges Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s side into a 1-7 to 1-6 lead against Offaly.

Dublin 0-8 Clare 0-5: Paul Ryan with another free for Dublin after Liam Rushe was initially fouled. Clare are struggling to win primary possession in defence and are conceding frees, something they cannot afford to do given the accuracy of Ryan’s shooting. Change in the Clare defence as well with the injured Conor Cooney replaced by Patrick O’Connor. 24 minutes gone.

Dublin 0-9 Clare 0-5: Midfielder Maurice O’Brien fires over a long-range shot after a mistake by Clare defender Patrick Donnellan sees O’Brien intercept his pass in the middle third.

Dublin 0-9 Clare 0-6: That could be an interesting two-point swing. Firstly Dublin’s Paul Ryan is uncharacteristically off target with a free from the left wing. Then at the other end Darach Honan is fouled by Peter Kelly and Conor McGrath slots over the resultant free. We’ve nearly 30 minutes played in Ennis.

Dublin 0-11 Clare 0-6: But Dublin respond brilliantly. Firstly Maurice O’Brien, justifying his selection with a combative midfield display, fires over from play after charging through the middle. Then Paul Ryan slams over a ’65 for his eighth point of the game. And it could have been worse for Clare but for Patrick Kelly deflecting a goal bound drive by David Treacy wide.

Dublin 0-11 Clare 0-7: A vital point for Clare courtesy of young defender Seadna Morey and it arrived after a couple passages of play where Dublin squandered chances that came their way. We’re in first-half injury-time.

Half-time – Dublin 0-11 Clare 0-7: It’s Dublin who retire at the interval with a four-point advantage after firmly setting the pace in the opening exchanges. They probably should have been further ahead as there were a few more scoring chances that they could have converted in the period leading up to the interval. Clare will be glad to retire at the break with a four-point deficit and will at least have the wind at their backs in the second-half. But they are struggling in various sectors as Dublin are bringing a greater physicality to the game.

Half-time – Cork 1-12 Offaly 1-10: It’s the Rebels in charge in the other qualifier tie tonight in Páirc Uí Chaoimh with captain Patrick Horgan the scoring star so far. His goal brought them back into the match after Colin Egan had raised an early green flag to put Offaly ahead.

Here are the scorers from the first-half of this evening’s game in Ennis.

DUBLIN: P Ryan 0-8 (0-6f, 0-2 ’65), M O’Brien 0-2, D Sutcliffe 0-1.

CLARE: C McGrath (0-2f), J Conlon 0-2 each, D Honan, T Kelly, S Morey 0-1 each.

The attendance in Ennis is 9,827. The wind will be with Clare in the second-half but they need to show definite signs of improvement with Dublin in control to date. Second-half about to start shortly.

Disastrous start to the second-half for Clare. Nicky O’Connell receives a second yellow card for a challenge on Danny Sutcliffe and is sent to the line. It’s a huge task now for them with 14 men.

Dublin 0-13 Clare 0-8: And Dublin stretch their lead further courtesy of Paul Ryan from a free and David Treacy from play. John Conlon manages to cut Dublin’s lead with a point for Clare but they still face a huge challenge being a man down for the rest of the game. 39 minutes gone.

Dublin 0-13 Clare 0-9: Clare are finding it difficult to make headway in attack with Conor McGrath and Jonathan Clancy both shooting bad wides. Clancy has now been withdrawn with Colm Galvin, a member of last year’s minor team, coming on. But Tony Kelly does provide some inspiration with an outstanding point after an audacious sidestep around the middle. Dublin change sees David O’Callaghan on for Ryan O’Dwyer.

Dublin 0-13 Clare 0-10: And that’s Clare’s third point on the trot. Sean Collins on this occasion raises a white flag after Liam Rushe had previously missed an easy chance to point. Clare displaying great heart with fourteen men. 45 minutes gone.

Meanwhile Offaly have drawn level at 1-13 apiece against Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Dublin 0-13 Clare 0-11: Now it’s a two-point game. John Conlon wins a free, Conor McGrath points the resultant placed ball and Clare’s confidence starting to grow. Dublin change has Shane Durkin on for Johnny McCaffrey.

Dublin 0-13 Clare 0-13: Draw game. Firstly an excellent point by Darach Honan after a pass by Sean Collins and then a sparkling score from the right wing by Conor McGrath. All the momentum is with Clare now. Another Dublin switch with Niall McMorrow on in attack for Paul Ryan.

Clare 1-13 Dublin 0-14: What a championship debut for Tony Kelly as he smashes a 20-yard free to the net for Clare after Darach Honan had been initially fouled. Before that Dublin had got some badly needed respite courtesy of a free that Alan McCrabbe converts. That was a pressure free for McCrabbe after Paul Ryan was withdrawn and the duties transferred to him. However Kelly’s score ensures Clare are in the ascendancy with 16 minutes left.

Clare 1-14 Dublin 0-15: An amazing point by Sean Collins from midfield as the Cratloe player launches over the score that increases Clare’s lead to three points. It’s been an incredible turnaround by Clare. Simon Lambert grabs a crucial point back for Dublin. This is going to be a fascinating finale.

Dublin substitution with Ross O’Carroll coming on for David Treacy in attack.

Latest from the other qualifier tie has Cork leading against Offaly 1-16 to 1-13. Cork captain Patrick Horgan saw his penalty attempt deflected out for a ’65.

Clare 1-15 Dublin 0-15: Clare are still holding the initiative. Conor McGrath converts a free after John Conlon was fouled. The Clare work ethic has been tremendous in the second-half and that Tony Kelly goal has been crucial. Ten minutes to go.

Clare 1-15 Dublin 0-16: A passage of scrappy play concludes with David O’Callaghan’s cross field ball finding Dublin’s spare man Niall Corcoran in space and he splits the posts. It’s very tense with just two points in it and six minutes left. Another Clare change has Colin Ryan in for Darach Honan, who has worked extremely hard in a difficult situation.

Danny Sutcliffe off target for Dublin and that’s their 12th wide of the game. Clare bring on Aaron Cunningham for Fergal Lynch.

Cork leading Offaly 1-19 to 1-16 with seven minutes left in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

A couple of poor wides by Dublin and Clare still hanging to a two-point lead with injury-time approaching.

Cork ahead by 1-21 to 1-16 against Offaly.

FULL-TIME – Clare 1-16 Dublin 0-16: And that’s it. A remarkable victory for Clare, their first senior hurling championship win in four years. The insurance score arrived courtesy of John Conlon in injury-time after Aaron Cunningham had done superbly to win possession deep in his defence and carry it forward.

A hugely dispiriting defeat for Dublin. This game was in their possession at half-time when they lead by four points and particularly early in the second-half when they moved 0-13 to 0-7 ahead and Clare had Nicky O’Connell sent-off. But they now crash out of the championship and after all the promise early in the season, 2012 has ended on a very low note.

Cork have held on in tonight’s other All-Ireland qualifier tie in Páirc Uí Chaoimh to defeat Offaly by 1-26 to 2-16.

A huge milestone in the development of this Clare team though. After the hugely encouraging signs of their recent underage form, they have now transferred that onto the senior stage. Cian Dillon and Brendan Bugler were immense in defence in the second-half, Sean Collins ensured they started to win the midfield battle while man-of-the-match John Conlon was outstanding in attack. Conor McGrath and Darach Honan popped up with some vital scores and youngster Tony Kelly showed incredible nerve to fire that crucial 20-yard free to the net during the second-half.

Clare and Cork now advance to the phase three draw of the All-Ireland SHC qualifiers. They will be in one side of the draw which takes place on Monday morning on TV3′s Ireland AM programme with phase two winners Wexford and Limerick on the other side. Those ties will take place next weekend at neutral venues.

Here are the scorers from tonight’s game.

CLARE: T Kelly 1-2 (1-0f), C McGrath 0-5 (0-4f), J Conlon 0-4, D Honan, S Collins 0-2 each, S Morey 0-1 each.

DUBLIN: P Ryan 0-9 (0-7f, 0-2 ’65), M O’Brien 0-2, A McCrabbe (0-1f), D Sutcliffe, D Treacy, N Corcoran, S Lambert 0-1 each.
