CSKA Moscow 1 – 1 Real Madrid

Hello and welcome, you’ve joined us just in time for this Champions League choosday kick-off.

The teams are just emerging into the cold Russian air.

Here’s those team line-ups again:

CSKA Moscow: Chepchugov, Alexei Berezutsky, Ignashevich, Vasili Berezutsky, Shchennikov, Wernbloom, Aldonin, Musa, Tosic, Dzagoev, Doumbia.

Subs: Revyakin, Semberas, Honda, Rahimic, Oliseh, Kim, Necid.

Real Madrid: Casillas, Fabio Coentrao, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Arbeloa, Alonso, Khedira, Ronaldo, Ozil, Callejon, Benzema.

Subs: Adan, Carvalho, Kaka, Granero, Marcelo, Albiol, Higuai

And we’re underway in the Luzhniki Stadium on the dreaded ‘plastic pitch’.

An early misplaced square pass is intercepted by Doumbia. Madrid escape any real danger, but are they fully focused?

The home side have started the better, not letting Los Blancos settle on the ball, and almost take a seventh minute lead. Dzagoev volleys narrowly wide after good work from Aldonin on the left.

Musa in midfield leading the charge, hassling the visitors at every turn. You get the feeling, though, they can’t continue this tempo.

Madrid, slowly but surely, are beginning to get a foot on the ball.

Benzema attempted an audacious chest and volley from 35 yards.

He didn’t quite connect right and hasn’t got off the ground since. Looks to be a groin strain and Gonzalo Higuain is pulling on his gloves, ready for action.

Sergei Chepchugov has just made a terrific double save to deny (first) Higuain and then Sami Khedira.

A lovely move; Alonso threaded a ball to Ronaldo, who flicked to Khedira.

The German’s first touch gave Higuain the chance on his left foot which Chephugov saved low to his right.

The ‘keeper was then up quickly to palm Khedira’s follow-up over the bar. 20 minutes gone in Moscow.

GOAL! Ronaldo looks like he’s wearing an aran jumper underneath his crisp white jersey. Who says he’s vain? definitely function over fashion tonight.

And he’s just gone and done the most functional thing you can do. Score.

Coentrao’s cross from the left isn’t cleared and it comes to Ronaldo.

On his left foot, he drills the half volley low across the ‘keeper.

Maybe it’s the cold, or maybe it’s the fact that he’s just shipped an away goal, but CSKA coach Leonid Slutsky looks a disturbed man; rocking back and forth in his seat.

He’ll have been heartened by Ronaldo hitting a complete air-shot when in a dangerous position to cross from the right side of the area.

There’s hope yet for CSKA. Doumbia is causing all sorts of confusion particularly for Sergio Ramos. Pepe manages to clear on this occasion, though

On the counter attack, CR7 buys a free-kick. He smashes the shot into the wall and claims handball, but nothing doing from referee, Bjorn Kuipers.

Good game, this. There’ll be more goals.

Every time Sergio Ramos touches the ball he looks panicked and in a hurry. Obviously he’s never the calmest defender, but the surface really is causing him trouble tonight.

The half time whistle has just gone here, Ronaldo’s 26th minute strike the difference between the sides.

Let us know how you think this game will go in the second half.

Also, do you reckon this is actually Andre Villas Boas’ Chelsea teamsheet for tonight’s game in Napoli?

Sticking with Chelsea before we get the second half underway, John Terry will definitely not feature tonight. He will miss the next six to eight weeks with a knee injury.

Anyway, back to the lesson at hand as they say. Both sides are on the field and Jose Mourinho has been booed back to the dugout. Kick off.

Oh, big chance for Madrid to get a second. Ronaldo slips a beautifully disguised ball through to Callejon. On his left foot, though, he gets the contact all wrong.

Seconds later the midfielder got another chance after Ozil picked out Ronaldo.

This time the ‘keeper made the point blank save after Callejon had gotten it under control.

They say it’s -10 and plummeting in Russia.

So, with 60 minutes gone, these substitutes will have plenty of warming up to do before they enter the action.

The game had hit something of a lull as the players got back in the swing. Ahmed Musa almost made things very interesting indeed with a barn storming run from the halfway line to the Madrid 18-yard line.

His shot was firmly struck, but found Casillas well-positioned.

The onus is all on the hosts to make this a spectacle now. Madrid are growing less adventurous, though still dominate territory.

Musa, has been a bright spark for CSKA, but Slutsky has hauled the teenager off for Sekou Oliseh.

Evidently in response to my battle-cry that they must take the game to Madrid. CSKA have withdrawn Aldonin, a defensive midfielder, for Keisuke Honda.

His first act is a long range free-kick which meekly bounces into the arms of Casillas.

The crowd growing restless here, angered by the increasing frequency with which white jerseys are going to the ground and staying down.

Callejon, first after a high boot from Dzagoev and 60 seconds later it’s Coentrao.

Madrid will be more than happy to finish this game 1-0.

Kaka is ready to take to the field.

Ramos leaps highest to meet an Ozil corner, but his header is straight at the ‘keeper.

On the next wave, Alonso picks a pass to put Ronaldo through on goal.

He takes a touch and Chepchugov does well to close him down and deny a second goal.

Coentrao pretty much chopped down Doumbia, right of the area. The set-piece from Honda almost caught Casillas unaware, but he did a Superman dive to punch it clear.

Should have been two.

Alonso oh so nearly threads a ball through to Kaka, but it is intercepted on the edge of the box.

However, the defender’s touch only drops to Ronaldo. From 18 yards he really should have done better than drag his shot low, left and wide.

Five minutes left at the Luzhniki. CSKA not able to mount any sustained pressure. Madrid are happy to boot the ball clear at any opportunity.

With Kaka, Ronaldo and Higuain on the field, they have more than enough to snatch that second goal if a chance comes along… but not many chances have.

The board has gone up. three minutes of injury time awaits.

Oliseh has been quite lively since he came on. He just swung in a very dangerous cross, but Pepe at full stretch clears, sending Kaka on the attack.

Free kick to CSKA one last chance….

GOAL: Wernbloom has given Ronaldo a rough time all night and he’s got the equaliser.

Dzagoev’s free-kick is flicked on by Wernbloom and Berezutsky heads it back in the mix.

Wernbloom had managed to shake off Arbeloa and shaped his body well to drive a left foot volley low, past Spain’s number one.

So, with the final whistle blowing almost directly after the equalising goal, CSKA Moscow have got something to show when they head for the Bernebeu.

They’ll still have to score to stand a chance of progressing of course, but they wouldn’t be the first time to do that against Madrid this season.

Mourinho’s side really should have come away with a clearer advantage. Instead they took their foot off the pedal somewhat.

Still, they have an away goal to take back to Spain and will be fully confident of playing with much more zeal on home turf as opposed to the artificial surface in the Russian capital.
