Fulham 2-1 Arsenal

Team news:

Fulham: Stockdale, Kelly, Hangeland, Senderos, John Arne Riise, Dembele, Murphy, Sidwell, Ruiz, Zamora, Dempsey. Subs: Etheridge, Baird, Orlando Sa, Gecov, Duff, Hughes, Frei.
Arsenal: Szczesny, Djourou, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Coquelin, Song, Arteta, Walcott, Ramsey, Gervinho, van Persie. Subs: Almunia, Rosicky, Squillaci, Arshavin, Chamakh, Benayoun, Miquel

The big news for Fulham is that Zamora is back in the team after a recent rift with Martin Jol. Chance to really prove a point.

And we’re off.

Gervinho volleys over within seconds. Good start Arsenal.

Matt Le Tissier made an interesting point before the game actually. Arsenal are only nine points behind the league leaders now. It’s still a big gap but no longer an impossible one.

Frantic enough game this so far, with Bobby Zamora causing problems in the Arsenal box.

Szczesny saves well to stop Zamora’s firm strike after Arteta had been dispossessed in midfield. This is very open.

Controversy there.

Van Persie slips Gervinho inside but, with the opportunity opening up for a strike on goal from close in, the winger horribly miscontrols. Philippe Senderos sticks his foot out and, although he probably didn’t need to, the strike theatrically goes down over the foot as if to make up for the fact he miscontrolled so badly. The referee waves play on. As we’ve often seen in such situations, there probably was a foul, but the forward’s attempt to exaggerate it arguably mitigated against him.

GOAL! Fulham 0-1 Arsenal

That is a superbly worked goal from Arsenal but questions have to be asked about the Fulham defending. Ramsey lofted a delicious ball into the box and Koscielny power it home beautifully with his head… but he did have the benefit of a complete lack of markng.

Nevertheless, Arsenal fully exploit.

Should have been 2-0 Arsenal but two superb saves from Stockdale. First a Robin van Persie effort made its way to Ramsey who fired at goal from close range. The keeper stopped it brilliantly only to then get up and immediately touch Gervinho’s rebound onto the post. Magnificent.

The brilliant Bryan Ruiz makes a penetrating run and shoots narrowly wide. That guy really was some find from Jol. Surely won’t be staying at Fulham too long?

Van Persie flicks his foot at a cross and forces another acrobatic save from Stockdale.

And, at the other end, Alex Song dives in riskily on Ruiz in the box but succeeds in making a superb tackle. Incredibly, the ref gives a goal-kick.

Hangeland just heads over. Fulham have responded very well.

HALF-TIME: Fulham 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal are good value for their lead but Fulham have responded well and this remains a quite open contest. Plus, van Persie hasn’t scored yet.

Fulham have been inventive and incisive, but Arsenal are revelling in the amount of space they’re leaving behind. It was the opposite when these two teams met at the Emirates earlier in the season.

We’re back under way and Fulham are pressing and probing at Arsenal again.

Fulham have really started this second half well. At the moment, as team in general, it just looks like they’re missing some final ingredient (a striker, most obviously). They are capable of playing some lovely football.

Fulham have had 56% possession in the second half.

Vincent Kompany has just tweeted this:

Watching the Fulham v Arsenal game. Moussa Dembele in my opinion the most underrated player in the premier league.

And, as Sports Illustrated‘s Jen Chang argues, “if Fulham ever get some decent central midfielders, the front 4 of Dembele, Dempsey, Ruiz and Zamora could be quite scary good”.

Very close to an equaliser for Fulham! Murphy clips in a free which Szczesney comes for and doesn’t claim. Senderos gets his head to it and it bounces narrowly wide.

And that was even closer for Fulham! Ruiz crosses, Dempsey leaps superbly over Mertesacker (who really should have done better) but it’s just wide.

Gervinho alleviates some of the pressure on Arsenal by scything through the Fulham defence but his lofted shot is weak. Van Persie attempts to get his head onto it but it’s just a bit too far behind him.

Gervinho coming off for Yossi Benayoun.

Wenger clearly going to try and kill off this game with possession. Introducing Rosicky already helped and Benayoun should complete it… but, just as we type that, Riuz thunders a strike at Szczesny which the keeper does well to pummel away.

RED CARD! Djourou is off for a second booking. It might be a bit harsh. A ball had looked to put Zamora through for a race to goal but, just outside the box, the defender put his arm across the striker. It didn’t look like there was a pull but Zamora went down and Djourou goes off. Free-kick Fulham

The free-kick is deflected away. This is going to be a nervy last 15 for Arsenal.

Arsenal sacrifice Aaron Ramsey for Sebastian Squillaci after that red card. It’s the defender’s first appearance of the season.

Zamora shapes and shoots from the edge of the box, but it’s deflected over.

GOAL! Fulham 1-1 Arsenal

There it is! And Szczesny is at fault at a set-piece again. A corner is floated in, the keeper comes and flaps at it. Senderos heads it back towards goal, and Sidwell finishes it from three yards. No more than Fulham deserve.

There’s only been one team in this second half and it hasn’t been Arsenal. Fulham would deserve to go on and win this. And they might well.

Oh and that was a bad call from the linesman! Ruiz looked to be through on goal only for the linesman to flag. He must have been a yard onside.

Three minutes of added time announced, just moments after Rosicky provides Arsenal with their first meaningful attack in 10 minutes by floating just wide.

GOAL! Fulham 2-1 Arsenal

How about that?! Just fifty seconds from the full-time whistle and Bobby Zamora smashes in a superb volley for his first goal in 12 games and a near-certain winner. Arsneal only have themselves to blame but Fulham have also been excellent.

FULL-TIME: Fulham 1-2 Arsenal

Wenger walks off disconsolate to complete a crazy few days in the Premier League. On the night, though, it’s no less than Fulham deserve after a superb response and all-round performance.
