AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: QPR v Manchester City

Having frustrated Chelsea recently, could QPR do the same to another of the Premier League’s big boys? Would City be so solid without Vincent Kompany? Miguel Delaney was following all of the action from Loftus Road.

QPR 0-0 Manchester City

The action just keeps on coming. But can Manchester City keep out of their box as assuredly without the suspended Vincent Kompany. At the very least, against an upstart QPR side, David Silva has been declared fit to play.

Team news:

QPR: Kenny, Young, Gabbidon, Ferdinand, Traore, Mackie, Barton, Faurlin, Wright-Phillips, Bothroyd, Helguson

Manchester City: Hart, Richards, Savic, Lescott, Kolarov, Barry, Toure Yaya, Milner, Silva, Aguero, Dzeko

And we’re off at Loftus Road.

City start with meaning: Garth Barry attempting an ambitious 25-yard drive…which sails wide.

QPR have began very well, getting a lot of joy around a narrow City’s flanks. Corner to the home side.

Not sure why, but I fancy QPR to get a draw here today.

As Jon Champion correctly surmises on ESPN, this does have a cup-tie feel to it. It’s going to be for important for QPR to keep that feel to Loftus Road this season and could also see them winning a fair few points.

After eight goals in his first six games of the season, Aguero has only scored two in his last seven.

GOAL! QPR 1-0 Manchester City

You would almost say this has been coming. Loftus Road rocks as Bothroyd meets Barton’s superb free-kick. That was too easy a set-piece all the same.

Question: would City have conceded from a set-piece so easily had Kompany been playing?

Oh should have been 2-0 QPR! A Wright-Phillips run ends up at helguson’s head who forces a fine save from Hart.

A piece of irreverence there from City that’s been more reflective of their sloppiness today than their quality. Silva tried to flick the ball towards goal when he had time and space to stop and shoot.

And QPR go close again as Bothroyd heads narrowly wide with City leaving all kinds of holes. The only caveat to this QPR dominance is that they might eventually rue not taking these opportunities.

Kolarov sends what looked a dangerous free-kick well over the bar.

GOAL! QPR 1-1 Manchester City

And that is the difference really. City were playing absolutely dismally but Dzeko receives Milner’s ball, creates space for himself and drives home. Superb.

Wright-Phillips is playing like a man possessed here. As Silva attempts to dally and dazzle to the ball, the diminutive winger sends him crashing to the turf before embarking on another purposeful run.

HALF-TIME: QPR 1-1 Manchester City

Having looked atrocious in defence and deservedly gone behind for the first time this season, City illustrate their depth of quality with a superbly taken goal from Dzeko. There’s a lot in this one yet though.

We’re back under way at Loftus Road… where, within seconds, Joey Barton tests Hart from distance. QPR aren’t going to be sitting back then.

And replays show QPR should have had a penalty there. Lescott had his hands all over Bothroyd in the box.

GOAL! QPR 1-2 Manchester City

That man again: David Silva. Another sumptuous piece of quality from the playmakeras he feints to pass to James Milner but then drives past Paddy Kenny.

City are rampant now.

As much as you might put that down to individual quality, though, credit to Mancini for making formation changes at half-time.

City have somewhat got their act together defensively second half, reducing QPR to long shots where earlier they were allowing straight runs and crosses through.

GOAL! QPR 2-2 Manchester City

So much for getting their act together! City are reduced to appealing for offside as the ball is flashed across their box for Bothroyd to get his head on it. Helguson deflected it into the net, with the City players arguing that he was offside when Bothroyd made contact. Replays show Savic played him on, however, so it’s the correct decision. Game on again.

Questions to be asked there of substitute Adam Johnson too as he just left the right flank free for QPR to venture down.

GOAL! QPR 2-3 Manchester City

Another quality response from City. Having sprayed the ball around a bit to sap QPR’s energy, the ball made its way out to Kolarov who crossed for Yaya Toure to plunder a header.

And here’s Balotelli for Milner. I’m sure there’s some link between Balotelli and bonfire night but I can’t quite think what it is.

Hero Jay Bothroyd comes off for Puncheon.

And QPR hit the post as Savic again loses an aerial confrontation with Helguson. This isn’t over yet. Eight minutes of normal time left.

Kolo Toure coming on for Dzeko, making Mancini’s intentions pretty clear.

Corner QPR, 92 minutes, Paddy Kenny up…

… Helguson tamely heads it wide.

Full-time: QPR 2-3 Manchester City

Not a convincing win for City on the day but a hugely convincing one in the long-term. In a match when Roberto Mancini’s side were clearly struggling without Vincet Kompany and also enduring a cup-tie style atmosphere and assault at Loftus Road, their attack admirably elevated the quality to clinically kill off QPR.
