Minor matters: Tribe prove too strong for Wexford

The young Galway hurlers blitzed Wexford with 2-15 in the first half of their All Ireland quarter-final.

GALWAY FLEW OUT of the traps in their All Ireland Minor Hurling quarter final in Tullamore today.

Wexford scarcely had time to draw breath before they found themselves trailing by 2-04 to 0-01 after just 10 minutes.

The Slaneysiders managed only four points in the opening half, Conor McDonald accurate from placed balls.

Galway, though, were rampant and merciless. With Michael Mullins in fine form they entered the half-time break leading  2-15 to 0-04. Mullins and each of his fellow forwards got on the score-sheet, as did midfield pair: Brian Murtagh and Cathal Mannion.

As can often happen; Wexford lashed out after the turnaround, scoring 1-3 without reply. McDonald got the goal to commence the second-half rally, but by the time Donal Shanley hit the net for a second time, Adrian Morrissey had grabbed Galway’s third.

The westerners led 3-18 to 2-09 going into the closing minutes. The result already beyond much doubt before half-forward Jason Flynn embellished the score-line further, firing a fourth past Oliver O’Leary to leave the final score 4-20 to 2-11.

The result sends Galway into an All-Ireland semi-final against Tipperary in Croke Park on August 19.
