Mongolian wrestling coaches strip off in protest after fighter loses Olympic medal fight

A bizarre protest was staged after the bout ended in highly controversial circumstances.

TWO MONGOLIAN WRESTLING coaches sensationally removed their clothes in protest at the the result of a bronze medal bout, in scarcely believable scenes at Rio 2016.

Sunday’s 65kg freestyle contest between Mongolia’s Mandakhnaran Ganzorig and Ikhtiyor Navruzov of Uzbekistan appeared set to go in favour of the former.

The contest neared a close with Ganzorig leading 7-6 and there were joyous celebrations between the athlete and his coaches as the clock ran down to zero.

However, huge controversy followed as the referee awarded a decisive penalty point in Navruzov’s favour, with Ganzorig ruled to have not engaged and fleed the hold to waste time in the final seconds.

This prompted fury in Ganzorig’s camp, with one of his coaches reacting to the ruling by taking off both his jacket and shirt as well as his shoes, which he duly bounced off the mat before screaming in frustration.

The second coach initially pulled his colleague away from the judges table, only to then strip down to his underwear and socks himself.

Their protests drew chants of ‘Mongolia’ from the crowd but did not curry any favour with the judges, who confirmed the result and added a further penalty point to the scoreline, handing Navruzov an 8-7 win.

That decision was greeted with further boos by the crowd at Carioca Arena 2 as a tearful Ganzorig left the mat, the emotion of his dramatic defeat becoming all too much for him.
