Movember power rankings: the top 10 sporting mos, week 1

As Movember kicks off for another year, we assess the early contenders from sports stars at home and further afield.

ONCE AGAIN WE’RE fully behind the Movember cause here at TheScore.ie HQ and we’re delighted to see sports stars getting into the spirit.

But as with last year, it’s not about taking part. It’s about winning.

So we’ve ranked ten of the best efforts so far and we’ll track their progress over the rest of the month.

If you spot a particularly nice nose neighbour that we’ve missed, let us know and your favourite might break into the top 10 next week.

May the best mo’ win.

Movember power rankings: the top 10 sporting mos, week 1
1 / 9
  • 10. John Mooney

"Starting to cultivate something now," Irish cricketer John Mooney says at the end of week one. Looks like this will be a slow-burner though.
  • 9. Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry's mo is another work in progress... but as he's donating for every birdie and eagle he makes this month, we'll squeeze him at number nine.
  • 8. Jordi Murphy

"Better then last year," writes Leinster's Jordi Murphy. What was last year's like?
  • 7. Patrick Hyland

Even if we didn't like Patrick Hyland's mo, who would mess with a boxer whose nickname is "The Punisher"?
  • 5 & 6. Tommy Martin and Kieran McSweeney

They're better known for their work in the studio than on the pitch but TV3 Sports duo Martin and McSweeney are setting a high standard.
  • 4. Freddy Michalak

Effortlessly cool effort by Michalak. The French out-half is in at number four this week.
  • 3. Tim Murtagh

Tim Murtagh's gone for a traditional "straight line" look but it's working for him. Good growth.
  • 2. Luke Fitzgerald

In at number two, Fitzgerald gets bonus points for modelling this year's mo on White Goodman of Dodgeball fame. If you can dodge a razor...
  • 1. Mathieu Bastareaud

We needed to call in an external arbitrator to rule on Bastareaud's mo. It seems incredible that a man can grow this much facial hair in a week but the TMO says it's ok -- he's the week one winner.

Whose mo is the best? And who do we need to keep tabs on before next week’s update? Let us know in the comments >
