Munster U21FC: Quarter-final wins for Cork and Tipperary

In Ulster, Armagh were successful over Fermanagh at the preliminary round stage.

Cork 0-14
Kerry 2-7

SUBSTITUTE SEAN KIELY was the scoring hero for Cork as his last-gasp point clinched victory for them in the Cadbury’s Munster U21FC quarter-final tonight.

The Ballincollig man was on target to seal success for the Rebels after Gavin O’Grady had crowned Kerry’s second-half comeback to hit the point that tied the teams moments previously in Páirc Uí Rinn.

The teams were level at the interval, 0-7 to 2-1, with O’Grady in the 15th minute and Shane O’Callaghan in the 22nd minute raising the green flags for Kerry.

However Cork had ace attackers in Dan McEoin and Brian Hurley who helped them forge clear by 0-10 to 2-1 during the second-half. MacEoin was outstanding as he finished as the game’s top scorer with a 0-7 haul.

Senior player Conor Cox helped Kerry rally in the third quarter before James Walsh and O’Grady landed brilliant points to tie the teams. Extra-time looked in the offing before Cork broke forward and Kiely’s late effort proved the match-winner.

John Cleary’s side now advance to face Limerick at the semi-final stage in a fortnight’s time in the Gaelic Grounds as they keep alive their hopes of landing the county’s third successive title at this level.

Tipperary 1-17
Waterford 0-9

Tipperary got their Munster U21 campaign off to a positive start tonight as they ran out 11-point winners over Waterford in Semple Stadium.

With David Power, 2011 All-Ireland winning minor manager, at the helm of the U21 setup for the first time, the Premier were grateful to the attacking contributions of three players from that successful minor side – Michael Quinlivan, Liam McGrath and Philip Quirke.

That trio shot a combined haul of 1-13 with Quirke’s input particularly noteworthy as he only entered the game as a substitute in the last quarter.

Tippary lead by 1-8 to 0-5 at the interval after being inspired by Michael Quinlivan in the early stages. The Clonmel Commercials attacker shot 1-3 to help Tipperary get off to a positive start as they moved in front by four points.

Senior attacker Paul Whyte pointed the way for the Waterford U21′s in the scoring stakes with help from Gavin Nugent to keep them in touch. But Tipperary proved too strong in the second-half with Quinlivan, McGrath and Quirke all leading the way as they move forward to a semi-final meeting with Clare in a fortnight’s time.

Armagh 2-10
Fermanagh 0-9

Armagh enjoyed a successful trip to Brewster Park in Enniskillen tonight when they claimed a seven-point win in the preliminary round of the Ulster U21 football championship.

Fermanagh started brightly with Conor McAleer  impressing up front as they moved ahead by 0-3 to 0-2 after 17 minutes.

However Armagh took over before half time and five unanswered points from Niall McConville (3), Ethan Rafferty and Jemar Hall helped them lead 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Armagh got a further boost after half-time when Rafferty fired home the first goal of the game and when Hall added the second goal soon after, the spoils were secured for the Orchard County.
