McIlroy given two-shot penalty on opening round at Abu Dhabi Championship

Northern Irishman was originally credited with a 68, but has been given a 12th-hole penalty.

RORY MCILROY BIRDIED three of the last five holes, but appears to have been awarded a two-shot penalty, leaving him on two under on the opening day of the Abu Dhabi Championship.

McIlroy originally shot a round of 68, but that has now been increased to 70, and his double-bogey on the 12th has been changed to a quadruple-bogey. Updates will follow on the cause of this penalty.

Italy’s Francesco Laporta shot an opening round 62 (-10) at Yas Links, one shot off the course record, to take the lead on day one. He is trailed by Jon Rahm, Sam Bairstow and Bernd Weisberger who all shot 65 (-7) for the day.

McIlroy’s late rally today could prove important as he continues to chase a record-equalling eighth Road to Dubai title.

However, the penalty has now seen him draw level with leader Eugenio Chacarra’s opening round of 70, while second-placed Patrick Reed struggled to a round of 74.
